Michael is an archangel mentioned in the Book of Revelation (12:7), and in the Old Testament he is mentioned by his name in Persian context of the Book of Daniel. He is represented as a commander (duke) of the Lord's army. There he appears as "one of the first princes" who in the spectre of Daniel helps the Archangel Gabriel in the fight with the archangel of Persia, and he is also described as a representative and defender of Israel and "great prince who stands up for the children of your people".

Michael is among the main angels in the Abraham's legends; they say that his name was fighting cry of the angels in heaven in the fight against the Satan and his followers.

Large portion of the late Midrash details for Michael are transmitted by the Book of Enoch, from where they were further reworked. In the late medieval Christianity, Michael, along with Saint George became patron saint of the chivalry, and of the first chivalric order of France, the Order of St. Michael in 1469. In the British system of honours, the chivalric order established in 1818 was named after these two saints – Order of Saint Michael and Saint George. In many Christian circles, Saint Michael is considered as the patron of fighters. The police officers and soldiers, and especially the paratroopers, consider him for their patron saint.

The Roman Catholics and the Orthodoxies call him Saint Archangel Michael.
